Should You Pursue Graduate Education Now or Wait?
By: Mary Gumellus Arabaca

Graduate education is a training that grants higher educational degrees.  If you are thinking about pursuing graduate school, the first question you should ask yourself is why. If you are sincerely focused on the field you want to pursue and have the time and financial capabilities to dedicate a fair share of time for it, then that is another good reason for getting an advanced degree.

However, you have to understand that pursuing an advanced degree is an extensive commitment and requires utmost dedication in terms of time, funds, and effort. Graduate school is not an extension of your undergraduate training. It’s more aggressive, concentrated and sometimes, demanding.

You need to have a clear and certain understanding of what you want to do with your career and how getting a graduate degree will help you achieve that goal.

What should be your principles in pursuing higher education degrees?

  • Identify and set your goals.  How will this help your career – or are you considering taking it because you simply have a lot of time on your hands?
  • Study your career path with determination and perseverance.  What can you learn from your higher education that you can bring to your work life?
  • Consult a mentor in school and in the workplace.  Sometimes, our seniors advise against taking higher education immediately after college and caution a couple of more years of actual experience before doing so.  Otherwise, the lessons in class will remain on a mere theoretical level.

What are the advantages of  acquiring a higher education degree?

  • Improving your skills.  Grad school can upgrade your industry information and skills.
  • Job Advancement. Some companies prefer employees with post-graduate degree once it comes to promotion.
  • Enhancing your own business. If you are developing and expanding your business, a higher education degree in your discipline will give you a greater understanding of operations, systems, and the economics of what makes a business.
  • Career Shift:  Graduate education can open doors as well as become a tool for job seekers who are making a career change.

Pursuing a higher education degree can and will definitely help, but you may need to wait for the right time.
