Find your Career Coach

After my regular morning schedule listening to my audio books, I learned to differentiate two terms that many people get confused with. We always tend to say “spend time with” whenever we are doing something. Here’s what I discovered: Why not use the term “invest” instead of “spend?”

There’s a big difference. When you spend, chances are there’s no return. When you invest, the return would be so much. This tine, little detail in language affects your subconscious. It even affects how you view things. Watch your language out. It takes you to places. Big question: Where?

I admire the people who have a positive attitude towards making progress by running after events that could shape their well-being.. There are very few students who would rather invest their time in seminars that elevate their personal development. I only know few who really pay attention to the urgency of time. Our interest to put some time to more valuable stuffs is a good choice of attitude.

One Wednesday, our career coaching finally started to work. Months ago, we planned to invest some time coaching students, young professionals, junior executives and entrepreneurs on their career and business life. Due to unavoidable circumstances, it got delayed. So we’re happy that at last, we got started. The next Wednesday thereafter, we had another great mentoring session in the Mall of Asia. My ‘students’ were all working professionals.

Two months ago, I met JP Sarabia of Shepherd’s Staff Inspirational Books and Specialty Shop. I proposed that it would be good if we’re to partner in organizing a regular career coaching program. We will provide the coaches, they will provide the venue. I got to him the time I discovered one of his stores. The amenities and location are just what we perfectly needed.

I got four students, two from DLS-College of St. Benilde and two from St. Paul University—Manila. And I discussed my module on The Success Pentagon.

In my mentoring, I outlined five major pieces that build or unbuild a career life: philosophy (what you know), attitude (how you feel about what you know), discipline (what you do about it), results (what it gives you) and lifestyle (what kind of life you live).

It turned out that my first discussion seemed to be interesting that we started at 7 p.m. and ended at 9 p.m. This isn’t bad, though I must say that it’s draining. That’s one of the challenges that a career coach always encounters. We can’t get away from thinking and making ways to communicate our wisdom in the most creative and interesting way.

I think you also need to involve yourself in coaching program such as ours. I’m not aware though if there are other companies who offer this kind of personal mentoring session.

Getting to this kind of meeting can give you the knowledge you need to succeed. When we offered this program to students, many didn’t have any interest. Eventually, they we hope they will. Aside from the knowledge, you also get to meet people who are extra careful handling their career.

One of the interesting points I shared was: If you want to be successful, you need to be surrounded by positive people. The wisdom is there is simple. Being with the positive people makes you feel and think positive.
