It’s not the economy, its’ your philosophy

"Because the economy is not doing good, we are not doing good as well. When the economy is already stable, then we will be stable as well."

This is one of so many statements I often hear when I ask people about their jobs or career. And I am convinced that this is the very same reason why many die without enjoying their work.

Many people leave their fate on the hands of circumstances. In turn, outside reality becomes their personal reality. What happened to drop-out Americans like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and many others is also true in the Philippines and elsewhere in the world. Hence, I strongly believe that it’s not about the economy.

The founder of National Bookstore for one, Ms Socorro Ramos, didn’t finish her schooling. And yet, today we see her amazing success on building the country’s national bookstore with more than 60 branches nationwide.

My point: It’s not the economy that makes a person successful. It’s his personal philosophy. In my book Is There a Job Waiting for You?, I mentioned in one chapter that even if the economy is good and you have a bad philosophy, then chances are you will fail. But when the economy is bad and you have the proper philosophy, then I can assure you that you can succeed.

The illustration of my point is this: Even if the economy is good, there will always be a food chain. If you don’t create a personal philosophy that will take you somewhere far from being a food chain crew, then chances are, you’re going to end up working in a food chain. This is, again, regardless of the economy.

What’s common among the successful people in the world who didn’t choose to get a degree is their philosophy, their entire value system that include their beliefs, mindset, motivation, vision and personal mission. These people didn’t let the circumstance take control of their lives. They all made their own circumstances where they can have control.

America was once a poor agricultural country centuries ago. But I believe it’s the mindset and attitude of people that made it as great as what we know today. It’s the philosophy of many American people that made it rise from the fall. And the same principle applies to any nation in the world.

What I always tell my students in LLOYDU is the same advice I will give you. Don’t let the economy or other people’s reality take control of your destiny and personal reality. It’s you who must take charge of your own life, not anybody else.

Lastly, make it your personal choice to work on yourself. In that way, regardless of the status of the economy, you will not end up working in an environment where you work more and are paid less.
